CPD Plan/Personal Development Plan

Introduction

This is an assignment that is prepared to improve oneself in both personal and professional life. In regard to this, there will be two aspects. The first one is a personal development plan based on the SWOT of myself and the current employment market. Second, the PDP is described and how the future actions to be taken in the personal development plan can help me to achieve my goals keeping the employability and my personality type in mind. To complete this task, I have also conducted a personality test on myself from 16personalities.com and I think knowing my personality is important if I am to grow better as a person.

CPD/Personal Development Plan

Reflection on Learning

I will be using Gibb’s learning cycle to reflect on what I have learned from the module and from doing this assignment.

Description: In doing this report as well as this personal development plan, I have pre-planned things beforehand. This is because I need to make sure that everything is organised and this structure gives me mental peace while doing any kind of work. Because of too much focus on an organisation, I had taken too much time in the planning stage while other classmates were doing the work. However, this planning meant that things became a smooth ride for me later (Goldsmith, 2011).

Feeling: Taking on this assignment is a pleasure for me because I am always trying to improve and tasks that make me look into myself helps me discover many new things that I did not know before. For example, the personality test explained why I like working in places where I can talk to people more and more.

Figure 1: Gibb’s Reflection Model (King and Mason, 2020)

Evaluation: My focus on planning and structure allowed me to finish the report on time and I was able to manage my allotted time very well. This aspect of my skills provides me with proof that I am good at managing time and planning. This also gave me the confidence to plan on my personal development and achieve new things (Beausaert et al., 2013).

Analysis: Preplanning is my strong point and I was able to do things smoothly but I would not have been able to write better if there had been any sudden change in schedule or the requirement. This is why I should be improving myself in these areas.

Conclusion: We are always improving and this is an endeavour that will never stop for me. This is why I am happy to make this PDP and write a reflective report on it as well. The action plans I have taken will help me to get to the point where I want to be in the future.

Action Plan: I will be following this approach when I will be doing another personal development plan after I have achieved my goals. However, I will try to keep myself flexible and will not panic if anything out of the ordinary happens.

Commentary on the PDP and Self Analysis

Personal profile

To understand me better, I had decided to take the 16personalities test. This evolves the work of Myers Briggs who says that based on 5 aspects of personality. These are extraversion-introversion, sensing-intuition, thinking-feeling, judging-perceiving and turbulent-assertive. From the responses of the questionnaire and data from previous samples, personal profiles are created. My test shows that I am an ESFJ-T type personality who is described as a Consul type personality. According to the test, people with this type of personality are popular and they make up 12% of the world’s population. They enjoy being famous and they are always there for their loved ones. Consuls also enjoy being around people and they are observant of most things that happen around them. Furthermore, I don’t enjoy talking about theories and such rather my enjoyment is in talking about people which can be considered as gossip. But if used properly then it will lead to better outcomes (Free personality test, type descriptions, relationship and career advice | 16Personalities, 2021).

The analysis also shows that I let emotions guide me which is why I tend to give all I have when I am motivated to do something. Intrinsic motivation is my main source of motivation. The test also gave me an understanding of my strengths and weakness as well. Based on the test I have found that my strengths lie in loyalty, practical skills, sense of duty, sensitivity and communication skills. These are aspects of my personality that I agree with. I am always well organised and planned when it comes to tasks. Also, I try to perform tasks given with a high sense of enthusiasm and duty. I enjoy being around people and because of that, I have good communication skills.

My weakness includes aspects like, worry about my status, inflexibility, rigidness, vulnerability to criticism, neediness. Neediness can be explained easily through my extroverted personality. I crave attention because I want as much human interaction as possible. Moreover, I do not have the emotional intelligence to handle criticism easily (Becker and Kolster, 2012). My feelings get the better of me when I hear criticism about myself. Also, my reluctance to improve or innovate is the biggest weakness in my opinion. This could make me inflexible and I need to change that.

Personal Gap Analysis

The skill gap analysis is a result of the personality test and the SWOT test. This will result in understanding the gaps in me concerning the current employment situation. I want to remove as many gaps as possible through the help of personal development plans. Based on the analysis my findings are the following,

Gaps that could have a problem in the future:

Inflexibility and rigidness: The modern world is full of uncertainty and it is constantly changing fast. Because I am mostly interested in keeping the status quo and keeping things as they are, I might suffer in the future because I will not be able to fit in with the requirements of the future job force. This is a serious issue and should not be taken lightly by me (Eisele et al., 2013).

Emotional Intelligence: One of the biggest strengths of a leader is his ability to handle immense criticism and not lose their cool (Sinding, Kreitner and Kinicki, 2018). Although I enjoy leading and helping people, I do not have the mental strength to handle criticism. This is not only true for criticism that lacks any base rather constructive criticism as well. The ability to handle criticism is key to handling conflict properly and improving myself.

Gaps in IT skills: Gaps in IT skills are there because the world is moving towards computerisation faster than many of us can handle. Skills in programming, coding and web development are key skills that can get used ahead in the future quickly (Đuretić and Krasulja, 2020). However, my lack of intention to improve has put me in this zone where I now have gaps in these skills.

Lack of calmness: Calmness is also another characteristic that I should be mastering. In situations that change quickly, I am unable to keep myself from panicking if I do not anticipate the thing beforehand.

These are the biggest skill gaps compared to the present scenario of employability in my opinion.

Actions were taken to fill up the gaps:

To fill up the gaps that I have found through the gap analysis, I have taken and plan to take the following steps.

Online courses: Online courses will be taken by me to reduce the skill gaps in IT mostly. They will help me to get familiar with technology and be comfortable using them while I learn new things like programming and web development. No matter the study and career background, these two skills will come in handy in the employment sector (Kourgiantakis, Sewell and Bogo, 2019).

Mentorship: To improve oneself as a person, one needs to have a mentor. A mentor is a more experienced person that will be able to guide me in the future (Đuretić and Krasulja, 2020). With the help of a mentor, I will be able to improve my personality and can increase my emotional intelligence through his/her experience.

Practice: Practice is a common way of increasing the expertise of a person. I will keep on practising to improve my IT skills and work on my ability to handle uncertain situations. Also, my leadership skills will improve through this (Galport and Azzam, 2017).

Feedback: Feedback is important for understanding improvement. However, one cannot judge their improvement always (Presbitero, Roxas and Chadee, 2017). This is why feedback from peers and mentors can be a great way for us to know how much we have improved.

Personal Development Plan: Personal development plans are a great way of structuring one’s improvement and reducing gaps. Most of my gap reduction has been planned through this personal development plan. I can set achievement targets with the help of the PDP plan as well.

These are the initial activities that I have chosen to take part in to reduce my skill gaps.

Concurrent developments in recruitment

The world is developing and changing rapidly. The rapid change has brought about new changes when it comes to recruitment and in the business sector as well. This is why I should be looking at the concurrent developments that occurred in this area and why I chose to include them in my development plan.

Remote Working: As COVID-19 fades from memory and life returns to normality, now is a good opportunity to consider some of the talent acquisition and recruiting trends that may emerge in the future. Many organisations are utilising online resources to interview and select candidates. Many works are being done from remote locations (Sinding, Kreitner and Kinicki, 2018). However, I am a person that longs for human interaction. This is why I need to get into work that offers human interaction even if the work is being conducted remotely (Kulkarni and Che, 2019).

Growing focus towards outsourcing: Many organisations are outsourcing their work while only core activities are being done through outsourcing them. This is why it is important to learn how to increase one’s skills because, in a world where every word will be outsourced, we will have to use our skills to get work (Presbitero, Roxas and Chadee, 2017).

Increasing focus on diversity: Managerial jobs are getting hard for managers. Managers are not only required by the company policy to hire people from diversified backgrounds, rather they are required by law to do this (Presbitero, Roxas and Chadee, 2017). As I am a person that can do well in administrative jobs and I like social status, I think I would have to be more welcoming towards diversity.

Increasing use of Artificial Intelligence: In the corporate sector, AI is becoming increasingly integrated. Organisations are utilizing AI to not only position their ads where they should be but also attract young people by sorting CVs online and administering online exams. As a manager, I must deal with situations like these, as well as the reality that AI is primarily responsible for marketing tasks (Black and van Esch, 2020). So, to live in this ever-changing system, I need to have more and more technological abilities, as well as the ability to swiftly adapt to new conditions.

Communication Skills: Working with people is a part of any job, whether it’s in a team or communicating with clients or consumers. Communication skills are one of the most crucial abilities to have while interacting with others. Good communication skills help you to simply and effectively communicate your arguments and ideas, making it simpler for your employer, co-workers, or clients to understand you. Joining public speaking forums such as a debate group or a society might help you enhance your communication abilities quickly (Sinding, Kreitner and Kinicki, 2018). Beyond public speaking, you may practice recording and evaluating yourself, looking at things like body language, too many “ums,” inaudible sentences, and other areas where you can improve. I have good communication skills owing to my personality type. This is a good thing because the future will need people with great communication skills (Griffin et al., 2020).

Adaptability: Change is the only constant in life, and this is true in the job as well. You can think quickly on your feet and operate well under pressure if you can adjust to change and be adaptable. Employers are on the lookout for this, and they want to know whether you’re flexible and adaptable, with a positive attitude and a drive to learn. You may develop adaptability by exposing yourself to new and rapidly changing settings, such as volunteering or participating in work experience programs (Galport and Azzam, 2017). You can also hone your creative talents, which will broaden your learning and thinking processes and enable you to come up with innovative ideas, even under duress. This is a sector where I am lacking and I should improve (Griffin et al., 2020).

Companies and roles that I will match based on my personality type

Administrative roles suit me the best based on my personality. This role is available in all organisations. However, some organisations and businesses require specialised knowledge for this role (Black and van Esch, 2020). For example, if I am to be a finance manager then I would need to be a finance expert. For me to be a good fit, I think the Human Resource or marketing would be best suited for me. This is because these roles require human interaction the most. If I become a manager in marketing, I would be able to lead the people better and my ideas would have a profound impact on the people. To lead in this sector, first I would require to be a marketing executive who will be interacting with clients and other people who will deliver my product. This role will give me the best pleasure because I would enjoy human interaction in this place.

I would need to take a course on marketing to improve myself and get into this role. I believe I would be able to do this in the future easily.

Requirements for successful employability in the position I will be good at

My personality type is suitable for leadership and administrative roles. So, I would be doing very well in these jobs and I would be enjoying myself too. To be employed successfully in this position, I would require, first the ability to enjoy diversity in my team. I need to understand that diversity is good in giving different perspectives. Organisations have operations in many countries and this is why different perspectives will be important for successful operations. Second, I would need communication skills. This is a skill that is my speciality and I think I will be quite good at building rapport and relationships with people (Galport and Azzam, 2017). Third, I would need to adapt to situations quickly and would require to improvise my plans. This is because leadership has to deal with situations where no one knows what may happen next. Plans can crumble down and when this happens the leader is required to show his/her skills by improvising and coming up with another plan. Adapting, improvising and overcoming should be the way of the leaders. Fourth, leaders will be leading people who are specialists in many fields. At present, people with computer skills are the ones who are being employed the most. To lead these kinds of people and give them a direction, I would need to have somewhat of digital literacy. After that, I will be able to direct them as a leader.

These are the important requirements for me if I am to be a manager/administrator. I think I will be able to get closer to these with the help of my development plan. After which I will prepare a new plan for me to improve on the requirements.

Conclusion

Personal development is key to growing as a human being. This is not only an important area for improving myself as professional and increasing employability. We can improve ourselves personally as well through this. I have chosen 2023 as a target for myself to finish my current personal development plan. The plan tried to reduce the gaps that I have in myself which I identified from a personal assessment. My personality drawbacks and weakness are reduced with the help of this PDP. I also studied the current employment areas to ensure that my development plan reflects the new developments in the employment sector.
