Skills help the student to be successful at university and professional life. At the university stage, some specific skills can be gained by a student. As examples, writing skills, reading skills, speaking skills, listening, skills on technology and the internet (Ockey, 2012). Among these skills, listening skills are pivotal to gain for a student to be successful in an academic career and professional life. Listening skills are also the foundation of other skills that should be gathered by a student in academic life at university. This essay will focus on the different listening skills at the university that is needed to be overcome in the academic setting. Moreover, this essay will also analyse the strategies to improve the listening skills in the academic settings

Study Skills Assessment for Higher Education

The ability to understand the teacher’s lecture is one of the most burning ones among listening challenges. A student has to give full attention to understand the teacher’s lecture. If a student gives attention to the teacher, then the student will be able to understand the topic which teacher discussed in the lecture. Understanding a teacher’s lecture is not very painful if a student is attentive to his teacher.

Therefore, the use of false start ad repetitive words misleading the student to get the right messages from the teachers. In the academic setting, a student has to develop listening skills to get success (Ockey, 2012). In the seminars, of any presentation students need to get the right message for the students. Another challenge of the student is to use unnecessary words for the students. In a different case, students do not get the proper message by using unnecessary words.  To give a proper presentation, listening skills are very important for a student. When the lecturer delivers a speech, the student has to capture the main points to explain in the presentation. Without listening sincerely, for a student to give a presentation smoothly, is not so easy.

According to Schmidt (2016), formal interaction with the authority or administration staff is depending on student’s listening skills. In the academic sector as well as the workplace student’s mutual and public interaction will rely on good listening skills. When a student will listen sincerely, he or she will be able to handle everything.  That’s why a student has to emphasize listening skills. Discussion on anything critically, listening skills is the first condition for a student to gather in himself. To exchange thoughts mutually or in a group rather listening skills is impossible for a student. At first, the student has to understand the lecturer’s speech properly then he or she discuss that speech. To understand properly, student needs good listening skills.

Listening skills play a vital role not only in the formal sector but also in the informal sector. To cope within social and in community listening skills must be needed. Without listening carefully, a student will not able to manage himself in social life and the informal sector. So, listening skills is must needed for academic and in the workplace equally (Schmidt, 2016).

Student’s listening skills are not only needed in academic settings, these skills are also needed in professional life and the workplace. Without listening skills, a student will not able to cope with an academic career and cannot manage properly the difficulties and barriers in personal life as well as professional career. The hard and difficult words through understanding the technical terms (Schmidt, 2016).  A student needs to develop the skills in listening to the teacher lectures for a certain context. For example, using the abbreviation and acronyms using in the classroom may disturb in listening and understanding the academic context.  The most important strategy is to adopt the understanding of the student to develop the quality of listening. For example, a student should have to ensure proper listening through the PowerPoint presentations and other visual presentations (Brownell, 2015).  

There are various ways to improve students listening skills that can be used by teachers. In the present modern era, there are numerous and outstanding strategies to gear up students’ skills including listening skills. To improve student’s skills at university, a teacher may help students in many ways, such as, by giving advice, by giving books and proper references about any skills and knowledge. Further, in the classroom, a teacher may promote students’ skills such as listening skills by maintaining quality teaching and by implementing some vital strategies.

According to Wagner (2013), eye contact with students is the most influential way to improve students listening skills. When the teacher delivers a speech to students in the classroom, the teacher should emphasize eye contact with students. Thus, students have to pay attention to teachers lecture sincerely. In this way, student listening skills may improve constantly. Therefore, Self-controlling power is the basic and root skill a student has to be obtained to reach a successful stage at academic career and workplace. A student should believe in his or her ability and also limitations. A should not be a daydreamer or superior about doing anything and any task. If a student takes steps by controlling self-emotions, then a student must reach at aim as wanted.

If the student cannot understand the lectures of the teachers, so there is a need for the assistance of the teacher in developing the skills of the students in the academic settings. Asking questions to the students is another most fruitful strategy which can be used by the teacher to improve students listening skills (Rost, 2014). After discussing any topic of the lecture if the teacher asks questions from the delivered lecture to the students, then the student will give proper attention to the teacher’s lecture. Students will be sincere about their course also and will be prepared to answer the teacher’s questions.

According to Renukadevi (2014) deliver a lecture by paraphrasing is another pivotal strategy to improve students listening skills. A lecture has many parts, if the teacher delivers speech every part elaborately but constructively, then students have to listen to the lecture sincerely and can be successful day by day. Delivering lecture rather paraphrase, the lecture may be boring to the student’s long lecture is not very suitable for students to understand the lesson. So, teachers can lecture in short paragraphs or paraphrasing to improve student’s listening skills.

According to Egamnazarova & Mukhamedova (2021), using digital technology may be another major factor to improve students listening skills. Digital technology includes showing Microsoft PowerPoint slides, speakers. By using technology teachers can improve students listening skills gradually. In the present world context, the uses of digital and electronic devices are very essential to the education sector. In this way, a teacher will be able to grip students’ attention to the lesson, thus the listening skills will be improved constantly (Wagner, 2013).

Conversation with students about the topic of the lecture is another most influential way to promote student’s listening skills. When teachers discuss with students then students can give proper attention to the lecturer’s topic. In this way, a student will be able to improve listening skills (Rost, 2014).

According to Renukadevi (2014), the academic lecture should not be so long. If the lecture is so long then students cannot give accurate attention to the class. A student’s overall skill depends on listening skills. To be a successful student, a student has to be a good listener and to be a good listener, a teacher may help in this way.

One who is a good listener then that person can manage everything. So, listening skills are must needed skill for a student to engage in academic career and workplace as well. Both teacher and student should emphasize students listening skills improvement (Brownell, 2015). By maintaining different teaching methods, a teacher can also help a student to promote skills, including listening and those skills which are needed to be successful in an academic career and the future workplace (Goh & Aryadoust, 2016).

Based on the above-mentioned discussion, we can say that exchanging thoughts among students the contribution of listening skills is unbeaten. Without this skill, a student cannot properly understand how to answer people in professional life and also in academic life. There are also various strategies to develop students listening skills at university for academic life and the workplace. Student’s skills may be developed day by day, so it is very important to more practice and should emphasize to promote skills continuously. To improve the listening skills, a student should have to ensure the proper understanding of the academic contents, lectures of the teachers. Therefore, students need to develop personal skills and qualities to adjust to different settings.
